Perhaps that is a stupid question but:
what do '/' and '\' mean in the context of this puzzle?

It is a way to indicate
long division
. So in this puzzle F*AB=GHI, GHI+JE=CDE and you can assume that JE<AB (that is to say, GHI should be the largest multiple of AB that is smaller than or equal to CDE).
